Character Information
Character Name: Varric Tethras
Canon: Dragon Age
Canon Point: Post Inquisition
Division and Position: Logistics, mainly working in keeping inventory counts accurate and seeing them distributed to the proper people. He is a top tier merchant, he knows how to keep tabs on items coming and going into his custody. He prefers not to be an officer because he hates writing reports.
History: Varric @ Dragon Age Wiki.
As Dragon Age is a game with variable choices, here is a list of important choice details I'm choosing to play with:
Dragon Age II
- Female mage Hawke
- Killed Bartrand
- Kept the Red Lyrium shard
- Sided with the mages
Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Male mage elf Inquisitor
- Recruited the mages
- Saved Empress Celine
- Hawke survived
Abilities:
- Varric is a merchant prince. He knows the wheels and deals of business.
- Very social and likable, he makes a lot of friends.
- At the same time, he deals a lot with spying and secrets and all sorts of underhanded business.
- He is quite handy with his repeating crossbow, Bianca. He can defend himself if needed.
- A rogue, he is skilled in picking locks and disarming traps.
- He is also an artificer, and capable of making traps himself.
- Adept at worming his way into things and a talented tagalong. If he wants to come with you, it's probably easier just to let him.
- An incredible and shameless liar.
Personality:
"Bianca, baby, introduce yourself!"
As far as dwarves go, Varric Tethras is very un-dwarflike. He has a disdain for virtually all aspects of dwarven culture, he doesn't see dwarves as inherently superior to all other races, and perhaps most damning of all, he hates being underground. Absolutely detests it. Some of this can be attributed to the fact that he was born and raised on the surface, but it can mostly be due to the fact that it is simply not how Varric Tethras rolls.
"Varric Tethras, at your service."
Hailing from the merchant family, House Tethras, Varric is well versed in social skills and his favorite method of choice when dealing with people is humor and sarcasm. He is often ready with a joke for the situation and he is quite fond of teasing people and giving them nicknames. A sign that Varric likes you is if he gives you a nickname, although some people just aren't nicknameable. Which is a shame, if you ask him. Although he comes from a wealthy and powerful family (at least, on the surface), Varric is most at home with the lower dregs of society. He believes you can't truly know people or a society from just its upper elite, you must know the common people. That, and drunken thugs are actually less likely to threaten his life than most other people he knows. As a result, he can often be found drinking and playing cards with just about anyone.
It may seem like he partakes in a lot of time wasting, but it serves a very important purpose - Varric is someone who knows how to use his social and business ties to his advantage. Knowing the right people can get you quite far in life. Friendship is a great way to get people to cooperate with you. And in the absence of that, coin and (as a last resort) threats also work. Varric is a strong believer in the power of information and he accumulates it via his social network and if he must, by using spies. From news of shady deals to gossip, Varric finds a use for a lot of what he learns.
What Varric is most known for, however, is how much he likes to talk to the point where he occasionally will self narrate his life. The man is full of stories and he is far too willing to share them. He fancies himself as an author and actually is a rather good storyteller who has published some novels. (Some of it filthy. A lot of it filthy. They sell quite well.) Varric possesses a large vocabulary and flaunts it from time to time. A self-proclaimed liar, he prioritizes entertainment over authenticity - what good is a story where the audience loses interest halfway through? But he always does tell what happens, he just...spices it up a little. Varric is a natural entertainer, and few things delight him more than the look of a person who is fully enveloped in a good story. The stories don't always live up to reality, however. Varric often uses his stories to dwell on the past, telling how he should have done things instead of how he actually did do them. Although he is vain and possesses a huge ego, Varric dislikes talking about personal things and prefers to make other people the stars of the story. He will not, however, hesitate to mention the hero's charming, roguish dwarf sidekick with a heart of gold.
The heart of gold thing's no lie either. Varric is a busy man and he keeps company with...questionable people, but he is also very kind. He fusses endlessly over his friends and it's common for him to stick his nose into their business to the point where it can get annoying. He will go very far, using whatever means he can to protect them such as paying off thugs to leave them alone. Even though this causes him much stress and mild despair at the loss of money. What a great friend. He's usually willing to help people out, even ones he's just met, especially if they appeal to his better nature. He appreciates skill and finesse and perhaps a little bit of greed, but never outright brutish behavior. He values family (although his relationship with his own is rather complicated) and friends and he doesn't like people who are unnecessarily aggressive and violent. Because of this, he doesn't take to betrayal very kindly and holds fierce grudges against people who cross him. When he's upset, Varric is much more open to the idea of violence. Some people just deserve a crossbow bolt to the face and Varric will gladly supply faces lacking in the bolt department.
"Bianca, you minx! That was beautiful!"
Varric's most prized possession is his crossbow, which he has named Bianca. He treats Bianca like a person (or more accurately, a lover), and can also be found speaking to her, even in the heat of battle he can be heard lavishing her with praise. He adores her and makes no secret of the fact that he does. Varric and Bianca are never far apart from each other and he refuses to use any weapon other than her. In fact, it's difficult to tell if he's joking or if he really is in love with his crossbow. There's a lot of history between the two of them, but it's a closely guarded secret - Varric claims that the story of Bianca is the one he can never tell. He might come up with a little short story about how he acquired her, but only a precious few know her true origins, mostly because those origins walked up to them and said hi.
"You must have me confused with someone else! I'm just a businessman and a storyteller."
The problem with having a mouthy dwarf as a friend is that he likes to talk. A lot. And that he might talk about things you don't want him to talk about. Not everyone appreciates having half true stories told about them (and they like "friend-fiction" even less), nor might they appreciate Varric nagging them if he thinks they're doing something wrong. He can be quite rude and enjoys dirty humor and can sometimes come off as insensitive. He will let you know when he's not happy by complaining, and he grumbles and whines when he loses a card game. Which, despite how it sounds, actually shows quite a bit of maturity and self control. Dwarves are known to kill people who beat them at cards. Varric enjoys being mischievous and annoying his friends by being coy and playing pranks, but it's rather easy for him to cross the line and can sometimes end up causing real problems for them. Not to mention that as someone who takes part in shady deals, there's always the chance that the shady deal is much shadier than it appears at first glance.
Perhaps because he's an oddity among dwarves and doesn't like basically everything about dwarven culture, Varric is disinterested in heritage in general and believes that cultural traditions are nothing more than pretentious trappings that prevent society from progressing and does nothing but cause problems. A rogue to the core, Varric has no qualms against petty crime and partakes in theft and pickpocketing from time to time. He simply cannot help it: he is a dwarven merchant and dwarven merchants like money. His primary method of dealing with big problems is to ignore them and pretend they don't exist by making himself scarce which not only surprisingly solves nothing, it often has the side effect of making them worse. However, a sense of responsibility and guilt always eventually bring him back and he deals with them rather reluctantly.
Also he rarely, if ever, answers his mail.
Motivation: He is here on the account of the Inquisition. The Inquisiton (and he, personally) is currently looking into a way to safely destroy or purify Red Lyrium, a dangerous and addictive substance that makes those who ingest or even just exposed to it more powerful, but also causes them to lose their minds.
Questionnaire: Please fill out the following questionnaire as your character. This will be used as your RP sample.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH?
My charming good looks, naturally. My storytelling comes second. And at a third, my aim with my dear Bianca.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST WEAKNESS?
Definitely kids. I see one in trouble and I just have to help out. I'm just too nice of a guy.
Q: RECALL A TIME YOU HAD TROUBLE WITH A COLLEAGUE AND HOW YOU HANDLED IT.
Okay, so one time Cassandra got really, really angry at me because I said I didn't know where Hawke was. Although I. Kind of did. So I did what any brave and manly man would do and stood up to her. Told her to lay off. And she was so impressed she totally did then brought me a drink.
Q: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE YEARS FROM NOW?
In a tavern, drinking the shittiest beer in existence. It's a good life.
Q: IF YOU FOUND OUT YOUR SUPERVISOR WAS DOING SOMETHING AGAINST COMPANY POLICY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
That depends on what it is they're doing. There's a big difference between sleeping on the job and sleeping on the job when you're supposed to be piloting the big metal thingy that holds the fate of our fragile, fragile little lives.
